Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me. –
Psalm 51:10

We sing the song all the time, create in me a clean heart but God revealed to me in this psalm the importance of the other line and word steadfast.

David wrote this psalm after he had gotten busted by Nathaniel, he writes this psalm in repentance, jotting his thoughts down in prayer as he seeks God’s mercy. And so God’s revelation to me

1) God needs to create a pure heart within side of us.

Obviously we love it when God does the work for us, anything He puts His hand on it succeeds. And also the factor of us being lazy humans…

2) Steadfast

David recognized that it was also his part to be pure. He asked to be asked for steadfastness not because he just wanted to add another line, but recognized much like the covenants of old he had a part to do this act of holiness. But he wanted God’s blessing, he wanted to be immovable from the presence of God and determined not to give into flesh.

I sing create in me a clean heart but I am steadfast too?
